Entre 2012 et 2014, à l’invitation du commissaire Hugo Vitrani, le duo Lek & Sowat a investi les entrailles du Palais de Tokyo. Ils ont invité une cinquantaine d’artistes à se joindre à eux pour participer à des performances, ou pour peindre les sous-sols et d’autres lieux invisibles voire inaccessibles du centre d’art.

Les trois sessions de cette exposition « Terrains vagues » ont mis en avant la tension entre l’officiel et le clandestin, la rue et l’institution, le visible et l’invisible, le surgissement de l’art et sa destruction, et sont à l’origine du Lasco Project, le premier programme d’art urbain du Palais de Tokyo.

À travers ce livre et trois films — dont Tracés directs qui a intégré la collection du Musée national d’Art moderne —, Lek & Sowat souhaitaient révéler a posteriori l’ampleur et la diversité du travail de ces artistes, qui créent pour certains des œuvres expérimentales et volontairement coupées de la visibilité du public.

De la jeune génération aux légendes du milieu parmi lesquels André, Azyle, Dran, Jacques Villeglé jusqu’aux pionniers historiques du graffiti américain et européen, tels Mode 2 et Futura, ce livre tisse pour la première fois des liens entre ces différentes familles et fait un état des lieux de la scène contemporaine de l’art urbain.

À travers entretiens, interviews de figures historiques, photographies d’Urbex et d’installations éphémères, images de films et archives documentaires, le livre de Lek & Sowat qui réunit près de 800 photographies d’œuvres et de peintres en action est un manifeste radical en hommage au graffiti.

Between 2012 and 2014, at the invitation of curator Hugo Vitrani, the duo Lek & Sowat took over the bowels of the Palais de Tokyo. They invited some fifty artists to join them in performances, or to paint the basements and other invisible or even inaccessible places of the art center.

The three sessions of this "Terrains vagues" exhibition highlighted the tension between the official and the clandestine, the street and the institution, the visible and the invisible, the emergence of art and its destruction, and were at the origin of the Lasco Project, the Palais de Tokyo's first urban art program.

Through this book and three films - including Tracés directs, which has joined the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne - Lek & Sowat aim to reveal a posteriori the breadth and diversity of the work of these artists, some of whom create experimental works deliberately cut off from public view.

From the younger generation to legends such as André, Azyle, Dran and Jacques Villeglé, and historical pioneers of American and European graffiti such as Mode 2 and Futura, this book weaves together for the first time the links between these different families and takes stock of the contemporary urban art scene.

Through interviews with historical figures, photographs of Urbex and ephemeral installations, film footage and documentary archives, Lek & Sowat's book, which brings together almost 800 photographs of works and painters in action, is a radical manifesto in homage to graffiti.
