Associated with the Figuration Libre movement, Hervé Di Rosa is one of a group of artists who made headlines in France in the early 1980s. Like Robert Combas, François Boisrond and Rémi Blanchard, he paints pictures whose brutality and apparent naïveté stand in stark contrast to the dogmatism in which art movements have been confined for several decades. Like them, he paints for a single purpose: the pleasure of telling stories, creating characters and staging them, without any theoretical intent.
In retrospect, few have seen - or wanted to see - a painting inspired by a broad-spectrum culture, an unsuspected classical taste, inscribed and nourished by a dimension far more complex than it first appears. Fewer still are likely to have detected Di Rosa's interest in painting techniques, a passion and curiosity that must be understood in the context of a vast range of practices that hold a lasting fascination for him, go beyond painting alone and become the driving force behind his motivation.
Because the comparison of his works with those of the past is not immediately obvious, so contemporary are his creations, the purpose of this book is obvious. Hervé Di Rosa's approach - that of a free artist who has long been inviting us to shift our gaze - our gaze - opens up the respectable field of art history to other horizons, and unrolls an Ariadne's thread to help us avoid getting lost in the production of images.
