Martha Cooper a consacré sa vie à documenter une forme d’art autrefois marginale, souvent illégale et largement incomprise. En 1984, elle publie avec Henry Chalfant Subway Art, un ouvrage devenu culte, considéré comme la Bible du graffiti et de l’art urbain.
Pour Spray Nation, elle s’est associée à son éditeur de longue date Roger Gastman pour plonger dans ses archives. Ensemble, ils ont trié, sélectionné et numérisé des centaines de milliers de diapositives Kodachrome 35 mm, accomplissant un travail monumental.

Le livre offre un panorama visuel exceptionnel : des tags confidentiels aux scènes d’action prises sur le vif, en passant par des portraits intimes et des rames de métro entièrement recouvertes de peinture, à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur. Cette richesse iconographique est accompagnée de textes sur la démarche de Martha Cooper, véritable hommage à un New York révolu.
