À l'occasion du 150e anniversaire de Mondrian, la Fondation Beyeler a consacré une grande exposition, Mondrian Evolution, au maître de l’abstraction à travers la présentation de 89 œuvres majeures allant de la fin du XIXe siècle, jusqu'au début des années 1920. C’est à ce moment-là seulement que l'artiste se concentre sur un vocabulaire pictural entièrement non représentatif, limité à la disposition rectangulaire de lignes noires avec des surfaces en blanc et les couleurs primaires bleu, rouge et jaune.

To mark Mondrian's 150th birthday, the Fondation Beyeler has devoted a major exhibition, Mondrian Evolution, to the master of abstraction, presenting 89 major works from the late 19th century to the early 1920s. It was only then that the artist concentrated on an entirely non-representational pictorial vocabulary, limited to the rectangular arrangement of black lines with white surfaces and the primary colors blue, red and yellow.
